Our Story. Our Purpose. Our Impact.

The Legacy of Deccan Education Society

Established in 1884, the Deccan Education Society is one of India’s most respected educational institutions with a legacy of over 140 years. Founded by visionary leaders — Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Vishnushastri Chiplunkar, Mahadeo Ballal Namjoshi, and Vamanrao Apte — DES was more than an institution; it was a movement for social transformation inspired by Gokhale’s ideals of self-help and collective purpose.

Over the years, this collective purpose has guided DES in shaping generations of learners and leaders. Its journey reflects a steadfast commitment to nation-building through education, continuous growth, and the pursuit of excellence.

Building a Nation Through Education

The founders envisioned an education system that empowers individuals and strengthens the nation. Their dedication laid the foundation for DES’s enduring commitment to academic excellence and ethical leadership.

Expanding Horizons

From its beginnings with the New English School in Pune (1880), DES has grown into a network of 58 educational institutions across Pune, Mumbai, Sangli, Satara, Wai, Shirur, Alibaug, and Renigunta—each recognized for quality education and holistic student development.

IMDR: Carrying the Legacy Forward

At the Institute of Management Development and Research (IMDR), we take pride in continuing DES’s legacy — nurturing thoughtful leaders, fostering critical thinking, and promoting social responsibility for a sustainable future.

About IMDR

A Legacy in Management Education

The Institute of Management Development and Research (IMDR), Pune, established in 1974, is the city’s oldest management institute. With over 50 years of distinguished experience in management education, IMDR is celebrated as a “Thinking Institution.” Our ethos rests on three pillars:

  • Technological adaptability

Shaping Thoughtful Leaders for a Sustainable Future

At IMDR, we believe management education must go beyond teaching business skills—it must prepare individuals to think deeply, act responsibly, and lead with purpose. As part of the Deccan Education Society, we carry forward a tradition of nurturing talent that serves both industry and society.

The world around us is changing faster than ever. Technology is reshaping how organizations function, while sustainability has become a global priority. Our approach, therefore, is to create an environment where students learn to connect knowledge with practice, creativity with discipline, and innovation with responsibility. We encourage them to ask questions, explore possibilities, and design solutions that address real challenges.

At IMDR, learning is holistic. We focus on building strong foundations in management while fostering critical thinking, adaptability, and teamwork. Students are encouraged to use data and technology meaningfully, communicate with clarity, respect diverse perspectives, and make decisions grounded in ethics. Most importantly, we want them to carry a global outlook while staying rooted in Indian values.

We see our graduates not just as managers, but as leaders who can inspire change—whether in corporations, entrepreneurial ventures, or social enterprises. Our aim is to help them grow into professionals who can navigate complexity, create opportunities, and contribute to a sustainable future.

I warmly welcome you to explore IMDR—an institution where ideas take shape, values guide action, and education becomes a journey of discovery and impact.

A Porous Campus for Open Learning

At IMDR, we often describe ourselves as a porous campus. By this, we mean that our learning environment is open – open to ideas, open to people, and open to the world outside. Knowledge here is not confined to classrooms; it flows freely across boundaries, connecting students with faculty, industry, entrepreneurs, alumni, and society.

This openness shapes how we teach and learn. Our students engage in discussions that challenge assumptions, projects that connect with industry needs, and initiatives that respond to social concerns. They learn to view business problems not in isolation, but as part of a larger system where technology, sustainability, and human values intersect.

Faculty members act as facilitators in this process, guiding students to think critically and work collaboratively. Industry leaders, alumni, and community partners enrich this ecosystem further, ensuring that education at IMDR remains relevant, practical, and forward-looking.

A porous campus also means that we encourage continuous exchange – of ideas, perspectives, and practices. Students step out to learn from the world, and the world steps in to learn with us. This dynamic flow is what makes IMDR a thinking institution and prepares our graduates to lead with adaptability, innovation, and responsibility.

I warmly welcome you to experience IMDR, where openness is our strength, and learning is a shared journey.
